A Personal Reflection On A Seemingly Arduous Year
2020 was an interesting year, to say the least.
I am not writing this piece to describe the plethora of societal difficulties that occurred over this past year — looking back, I’m sure a simple web search of the term “2020” will do a good enough job encapsulating what a seemingly terrible year this was for the globe at large.
Instead, this post is a continuation of my tradition (started back in 2018) of writing a review of how the past year was for me.
2020 was not a bad year for me. Despite living in a time where it has become commonplace to romanticize how terrible 2020 was, for me to do so would not be honouring my personal truth. 2020 was incredible for me. Although it did bear plenty of challenges and disruptions within my life, alongside them came many new opportunities, victories and spoils.
If I had to describe a personal theme for myself looking back at my experience of 2020, it would be the transformation of challenges into opportunities.
When I say 2020 was incredible for me, I do not mean to say I was exempt from my share of challenges and hardships — just as 2020 shook up the world, so too did it shake up my life. What many teachings of prior years of my life taught me, however, was to build the resilience to withstand those tremors. One of those key lessons was changing the way I observed events in my life happening; no longer did I adopt a subjective “good” and “bad” lenses to view events, but rather an objective lens of “is”. What happened to me in 2020 was not good or bad, it simply just is. Through this lens, I managed to seek the highest opportunity for growth, joy, and prosperity despite whatever circumstances were thrown at me.
Despite the overwhelming amount of challenges, I personally achieved a lot. My life in 2020 was nothing on how I predicted or planned it would be before the year began, regardless I am proud of myself for navigating it in such a way that afforded me so much.
As with my previous year in reviews, I have included my top 5 influential moments from 2020 that I want to cherish.
Aside from the first entry of the 5, they are in no particular order.
