What we can learn from the recent A.I. selfie trend.

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’ve recently seen on your social media feeds countless portraits of your friends, family, and favourite internet personalities depicted as cartoons, mystics, superheroes, and other various emboldened versions of themselves. This, of course, is the work of Artificial Intelligence (A.I.) generated artwork.

For a small group of people, this type of A.I. utilization will serve as a means for production and commerce. For many more, it will be deployed as a neat “check this out” party trick. But to all, it will likely be contemplated as a potential warning sign of an upcoming A.I.-spawned existential human apocalypse.

Now although the philosophical, ethical, and moral debates around the subject do fascinate me — and can/will likely make for more content from me in the future — for now, I would like to take a different approach to the discussion.

Rather than asking, Should we coexist with Artificial Intelligence?” — with a knowingness that, at this point, we don’t have a choice — in this piece, I would instead like to explore the question, “How do we mere humans coexist with Artificial intelligence?”

Using technology like Lensa A.I. (the app behind the recent social media trend), we could fill Louvre-sized art galleries full of diverse artwork in mere minutes, if not seconds. Considering that the Lensa A.I. was able to produce a hundred portraits on my phone in just shy of a half hour (a rate of portrait creation that even the quickest of ink-slinging state-fair caricature artists could dream of achieving), we begin to get an idea of the magnitude we are dealing with when we factor in the scale of how many people were utilizing Lensa AI all at once.

The speed and detail of artificial intelligence will only increase in time. Humans limited by their slow-to-evolve biology will not be able to keep up. So how can we possibly hope to keep up?

What A.I. is capable of right now.

To emphasize the point of humans not being able to keep up, since many are resistant to accepting this fact. Let’s…
